Gear selection is about providing the right amount of power to move the vehicle safely and efficiently, especially as conditions change. You upshift when cruising at steady speeds and you want to keep the engine RPM lower for better efficiency. Engine horsepower influences how much power is available, but it’s the torque and the current task (starting, climbing, accelerating, or cruising) that guide which gear you pick. Road grade increases the torque you need to maintain speed uphill, pushing you toward lower gears; heavier load also raises the torque demand, again favoring lower gears. Tire tread type, on the other hand, mainly affects traction and braking grip. It changes how well you can accelerate or stop on different surfaces, but it doesn’t determine which gear you should select. So tire tread type is not a factor in choosing gears.
